Nutritional Needs: Potassium

Nutritional Needs: Potassium

Yum, yum, potassium! Are you getting enough of this essential mineral?

With the help of the team at Hoag Concierge Medicine, you can make sure you are getting what you need, when you need it. Our services include nutrition counseling, which will provide you with a structure and strategy to your diet.

What Does Potassium Do?

The main role of potassium is to help with the maintenance of normal levels of fluid inside the cells in our bodies. It is closely related to sodium in the way that it functions within the body. Potassium helps muscles contract and supports normal blood pressure, and sodium, on the flipside of potassium, maintains normal fluid levels outside of cells.

Low Potassium Symptoms:

  • Constipation
  • Heart palpitations
  • Extreme tiredness (fatigue)
  • Muscle weakness and spasms
  • Tingling and numbness

While the general guidelines for daily potassium intake are aiming for at least 4,700 MG/DAY, the exact amount differs from person to person, based on a variety of factors.
